Smoking For Jesus boys basketball falls one basket short of comeback against Savio
The Smoking For Jesus boys basketball team lost to Austin Savio 57-55 Jan. 10, a day after beating San Antonio Town East Christian 62-51.
The Eagles (9-11) trailed by 15 points with 2 minutes and 30 seconds remaining and used their full-court press to create offensive opportunities.
With 12 seconds remaining, Savio inbounded the ball that the Eagles stole. The Eagles had two opportunities to score, but the ball rimmed out both times.
In the final minutes, senior center Bryson Culver made field goals and foul shots to help pull SFJMCS within a possession.
Head coach Boo Maxwell said “it says a lot” about his players’ desire and heart in not giving up in the final minutes when other teams would have conceded defeat.
That was especially true with the adversity the Eagles faced to start the contest. Senior guard Isaac Legier did not play and Culver was ill during the first half.
Their absences allowed others to step up, particularly Legier’s younger brother, Samuel, who scored 8 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and had a block and a steal.
“I’m very proud of Samuel,” Maxwell said. “It was a great team effort. I wasn’t mad at the loss. The game was exciting in the second half.”
The Eagles led Town East from start to finish beginning with an 18-6 advantage after the first quarter, 29-19 lead at the half, and 49-31 headed into the final period.
“We definitely cruised to victory,” Maxwell said. “We all played well. Three of our starters had double digits. It went exactly how I thought.”
Senior guard Jonathan Frazier led with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 blocks. Culver added 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, and Isaac Legier dropped in 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks.
In other news, Isaac Legier, Culver and Frazier are all ranked in the top 15 in scoring among members of the Texas Association of Independent Athletic Organizations, of which SFJMCS is a member. Isaac Legier is No. 2, Culver is No. 3, and Frazier is No. 5.
The Eagles are traveling to Corpus Christi for a tournament Friday-Saturday, Jan. 13-14, and welcome Town East at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19.
